The author, by sharing personal experiences, provides a detailed discussion on how to leverage the content recommendation algorithm of the X platform (Twitter) to optimize posting strategies.

Behind every organically-grown account there is a deep understanding of the X algorithm for content placement. For the first time ever I’m sharing publicly many of my “lessons learned” that helped me punch above my weight as I was growing my account….

I’m going to list these from more known to lesser known (or thereabout)…

  • Time of day - when you post matters for engagement. I’m EST-based and the bulk of my audience is on EST-PST…so my usual posting hours are from 9AM-9PM with peak from ~10AM-4PM. You’ll have to experiment and figure out when you get optimal views/engagement based on your audience and the habits you’ve trained them on.
  • Frequency - this is a general rule, but more than 1 post per hour results in less distribution on each post and forces the algorithm to pick one or the other to serve to your followers. Rule of thumb is >1 hour between posts
  • Tagging - NEVER tag more than 3 accounts. It completely nukes your reach…especially if the accounts tagged don’t interact. I find that generally tagging any accounts in the OP is deboosted unless they interact shortly after posting. This becomes less of an issue the larger your account grows, but it still matters. I prefer to tag relevant accounts in the top comment.
  • External links - these CRUSH your reach. Nikita and Elon have both said multiple times that they aren’t deboosted, but it’s just a natural function of ppl clicking the link resulting in less viewer seconds spent on the post…honestly I don’t believe that at all due to personal observations and 100% believe that externals are deboosted. It’s best practice to include a reflink or other external link in the top comment.
  • “See more” - basically if you have more text than the default max characters per post on your tweet, a truncated version of your post is served to the timeline and users can click see more to expand. if you have a good tweet or good hook this will dramatically increase reach bc people will click see more. If your first 140 characters are ass then it won’t help at all bc no one will want to see more.
  • Spacing - in a similar vein, you’ll see many accounts write one line at a time with whitespace between the lines. This isn’t so much an “algo” thing as it is a zoomer attention span hack. People generally glaze over when they see more than a 3 lines together. Split up your posts to make it more likely that someone will spend time reading it (thus maximizing user seconds spent on post and increasing engagement + broader algorithm distro).
  • Images - a good image can absolutely juice a post. More than 10 lines? Yeah you should probably have a well placed image of some sort to help draw user eyes. Smaller text on images can actually be bullish for engagement if it’s an interesting picture…because it forces ppl to spend more time trying to read it = more user seconds on the post. A bad image or pointless one will cause ppl to leave faster. Use them wisely
  • Opening - this one really isn’t as important as some gurus would tell you imo. A good opening/hook can definitely help but it isn’t critical for virality. I’ve used them to great effect when I make “I made X amount of money in the last X days purely through social capital” and then go on to talk about Polkadot or other projects that I’ve created content for that ended up generating rewards. If I started those off in another way they likely wouldn’t catch as many eyes - ppl want to know how they can also make X money by posting.
  • Theme consistency - still experimenting with this one, but generally speaking audiences like what they’re comfortable/familiar with. It is easier to digest content that way and requires less active thought (whether that’s good or bad I won’t comment on). For me that means having occasional content series/etc so that ppl coming to my page know what to expect from a post. It also fosters some loyalty. A good series can create lots of engagement and follows in a short amount of time.
  • QTs - this is a double edged sword. A well-placed QT is a kingmaker. If you can QT a high value/high audience account and get a positive response on your own post you’re cooking with gas. If you post something stupid and they block you, gg you played yourself. There’s a lot of timing and situational awareness required to make these work. Some people report overall lower engagement and impressions on QTs…I find the opposite to be true but that may be more due to my audience composition.
  • Pinning - this is probably the least understood, mostly because there was an update very recently…It used to be the case that you only got an algo boost on pins once every >24 hours. Sometime recently that was updated to be every 12 hours as per this new message/notice that shows up in the iOS app if you try to pin something within 12 hours of pinning a previous post. USE PINS. Every time someone comes to your profile they will see it. There is also now a dedicated “ppl you follow recently pinned” feed inside the FYP that double highlights pins. Most ppl are not effectively using pinning. That can be your edge.

I think that’s enough for today. There’s probably more nuance here and more tips to give, but we’re almost at a thousand words and I don’t want to give away all of the sauce. If you’ve got something that you think works drop in the comments and I’ll check ‘em out :)
