Cybersecurity company Kaspersky discovered a new malware that aims to steal the recovery phrases of crypto wallets by infecting iOS and Android devices. This malicious software, called "SparkKitty", specifically targets users in China and Southeast Asia.
Kaspersky Unveils New Wallet Theft Virus "SparkKitty" Targeting China and Southeast Asia
According to Kaspersky researchers, SparkKitty secretly scans all images in the user's photo album after infecting mobile devices. The aim is to detect recovery phrases of cryptocurrency wallets, which are usually saved as screenshots.
The virus spreads by disguising itself as legitimate applications. These include:
SparkKitty is believed to be linked to malware called SparkCat, which was detected in January 2024. Research shows that both viruses share similar characteristics and may have been developed by the same source. The activities of SparkKitty extend at least until the beginning of 2024.
Although the primary target is currently users in China and Southeast Asia, Kaspersky experts emphasize that the technical capacity of the virus could pose a global threat.
Kaspersky announced that it provided information to Google about the relevant applications and that the applications have been removed from the stores.
Users are advised not to store wallet recovery phrases digitally, to stay away from unknown applications, and to use security software on their mobile devices.
