Sony collaborates with Astar to launch Ethereum L2 Soneium targeting mainstream users

Sony Launches Ethereum Layer-2 Network Soneium

Sony Group recently established a blockchain department and launched the Ethereum-based Layer-2 network Soneium. As a globally renowned technology company, Sony holds significant influence worldwide, with its products and services covering various fields including electronics, entertainment, and finance.

Soneium is an Ethereum Layer-2 solution jointly developed by Sony and Startale Labs. Startale Labs is known for developing Japan's largest public chain, Astar Network. Soneium is built on the OP Stack and integrated with the Optimism Superchain. It aims to provide a universal blockchain platform for creators and developers, leveraging Sony's global influence for expansion.

Soneium's goal is to go mainstream. To this end, Soneium officials have repeatedly mentioned the slogan "Go Mainstream" and cleverly used the abbreviation "GM" that Web3 users are familiar with, receiving praise from the Web3 community.

Astar Network is reshaping its Astar zkEVM into Soneium L2. This collaboration will enable Astar to leverage Sony's expertise in entertainment, gaming, and finance to integrate Web3 technologies into real-world applications. $ASTR will support the Soneium ecosystem, but the Gas token will still be $ETH. Currently, there are no plans for Soneium to issue a native token.

The Soneium Minato testnet was launched on August 28, providing developers with an environment to build and test dApps. In addition, Soneium has launched the Spark incubation program, offering potential projects up to $100,000 in investment and other support.

In just half a month, more than 60 projects have announced they will develop or integrate on Soneium. These projects span various fields including SocialFi, GameFi, RWA, DeFi, NFT, and infrastructure, showcasing the diversity and potential of the Soneium ecosystem.

It is worth noting that some well-known projects such as Yay!, Layer3, Ionic, Velodrome, etc. have stated that they will support Soneium. In addition, many projects that were originally in the Astar ecosystem have also announced that they will migrate to Soneium.

In terms of infrastructure, Alchemy, Graph Protocol, Sentio, and other technical partners will provide developer tools and data services for Soneium. Cross-chain bridges such as Chainlink, Layerswap, and Orbiter Finance have already supported or plan to support Soneium, offering users asset cross-chain services.

Although Sony's global influence may attract a large number of Web2 users to Soneium, it remains to be seen whether Soneium can truly attract and retain users in the currently competitive Layer-2 market. The future development of Soneium is worth continuous attention.
