Vitalik Buterin: Ethereum Set to 10x Its Capacity in Just Over a Year – But Cautiously
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has unveiled an ambitious yet cautious plan: Ethereum’s Layer 1 scalability will increase tenfold within a little over a year—without compromising the network’s decentralization.
🔹 Tenfold Scaling for Ethereum? Yes, But Thoughtfully
Speaking during a panel at ETHGlobal Prague, Buterin confirmed Ethereum’s intention to massively boost the throughput of its base layer (L1). However, he stressed the need for restraint—arguing that rushing scaling efforts could harm the network’s long-term integrity. “Scaling L1 in a little over a year is an ideal compromise. We won’t rush it, but we’ll still make significant progress,” Buterin said.
🔹 More Time Means More Stability
The extended timeline will allow the Ethereum dev team to:
🔹 assess censorship resistance,
🔹 preserve user privacy and decentralization,
🔹 implement innovations like stateless nodes,
🔹 potentially improve the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Buterin emphasized that this “pause” is crucial to ensure Ethereum remains decentralized and credible in the eyes of its community.
Calls for Immediate Scaling Intensify After a challenging Q1 2025—marked by a drop in ETH price and weakened on-chain activity—some voices in the community are demanding immediate Layer 1 scaling. Notably, Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist warned that if Ethereum fails to scale 100x in the next five years, the network could face a serious threat. He insists that such scaling wouldn’t sacrifice Ethereum’s decentralization or privacy.
But Buterin disagrees with this aggressive stance: “Taking a breather and ensuring stability is the best way to scale safely,” he stated, rejecting overly hasty strategies.
Ethereum Eyes $3,000 – Institutional Players Step In As L1 scaling debates heat up, Ethereum is gradually recovering. The target of $3,000 aims to erase Q1 losses. Meanwhile, institutions are paying attention—SharpLink Gaming is planning a $2 billion ETH investment via BTSC and ETFs, signaling renewed interest despite recent downturns.
